Owner of My Friend Kate
I started working with the Pierced Ear stores in 1983 in Minot, ND, and I’ve been piercing ears ever since—unless you count the ears I pierced at a sixth-grade slumber party! Looking back, I can truly see how God had a plan for my life. (Jeremiah 29:11–13) In 1987, I became a district manager, overseeing 13 Pierced Ear stores, and shortly afterward, I moved to North Carolina. I eventually became a junior partner with seven stores and later a full-time partner before stepping out on my own in 2013. Over the years, I’ve watched God open doors and make a way time and time again, leading us to create My Friend Kate and leave the malls behind. We operated locations in New Garden, Kernersville, and Martinsville, VA, before eventually deciding to focus on our Greensboro location. Today, I’m a proud grandmother of nine, and when I’m not spending time with my grandbabies or babysitting, you can usually find me working weekends at My Friend Kate!

Twenty-six years ago, while I was in college, I started working at The Pierced Ear, what would later be My Friend Kate, and what I thought would be a college job turned into so much more. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Kate, building lasting relationships, and being part of an amazing community.
Along the way, life has been wonderfully full. I raised my two boys, who are now 20 and 14, and returned to graduate school to pursue my passion for helping others as a therapist. I’m grateful to still be part of the team while also doing the work I love.

Meet another amazing employee at My Friend Kate! I’m Emily, and I’ve been with My Friend Kate for 5 years now! I’m a proud graduate of RCC (Randolph Community College) with the aspirations to go into nursing. I absolutely love piercing anyone who’s willing! With my need for perfection, I make sure everyone is happy with the placement of every piercing—myself especially. When I’m not busy piercing, you can surely find me adjusting things around the boutique and making sure the rest of our incredible team is set up for success. When I’m not working at My Friend Kate or my other jobs, you can find me hanging out with my family, munching on a snack at some point, or napping on my couch.

Hey y’all! I’ve been part of the My Friend Kate family since January 2020, and even when the store shut down just a few months later because of COVID-19, I wasn’t scared away! I’m currently a student at UNCG, a former Child Behavioral Technician, a current nanny, and a future Speech-Language Pathologist. My Friend Kate has been a constant throughout it all, and I’m so grateful to be part of a place where I get to work with children and families. Working with kids and creating special memories with families is what makes me happiest, and getting to be part of those moments at My Friend Kate truly fills my heart with joy. I’m our experienced baby piercing technician, or as we like to call me, the “baby whisperer”! I love making every piercing experience safe, exciting, and as stress-free as possible. Whether it’s your little one’s first earrings or a fun new piercing for someone of any age, I love helping make the experience special!

I started at My Friend Kate in February of 2026 and even though I am the new gal in the family, I am an EMT and I have a heart and passion to help and serve others—being the 7th of 7 kids—I bring laughter wherever I go. Becoming a part of My Friend Kate has been such a joy and getting to be a part of memories being made and piercing ears and seeing the excitement in the little ones eyes when they get their ears pierced makes me so happy. Whenever I am not working at my friend Kate and on the ambulance, I spend my time outdoors and going on adventures!

I’ve been part of the My Friend Kate family on and off since 2006, and as the daughter of the owner, this business has always been close to my heart. I originally helped build our online store and now provide ongoing website and web support behind the scenes. These days, I’m also a stay-at-home mom to four kids, so I balance keeping My Friend Kate’s online presence running with the wonderfully busy world of motherhood. I love finding ways to make technology work for our small business and helping my mom navigate the ever-changing world of AI and the challenges small, family-owned businesses face when large, nationwide chains enter the market and threaten their livelihood. I’m passionate about helping My Friend Kate adapt, stay competitive, and continue providing the personal, local experience that makes a small business special. While I may not always be in the store, I’m proud to play a behind-the-scenes role in helping My Friend Kate continue to grow and thrive while staying true to the heart of our family business.
